Seems like Australian tennis all star Nick Kyrgios has had a change of heart. He’s now set to play in the next French Open, after suggesting earlier that he wouldn’t play it. The 30-year-old, who last competed on the Parisian clay as a player in 2017 with a second-round exit, a last-minute twist altered the course of everything. With fellow Australian Max Purcell already handed a doping ban, Kyrgios is reconsidering his initial decision.
The French Open starts May 25th! Kyrgios is joining forces with fellow Australian Jordan Thompson to have a crack at the doubles tournament. Kyrgios explained his change of heart, stating, “The French Open was never really on the cards. After the stuff with Max Purcell, Jordan was looking for a partner and he asked me if I wanted to play.”
Kyrgios’ only previous title at the Australian Open came in the 2022 doubles, where he and Thanasi Kokkinakis reigned supreme. He had a tough year, dealing with foot, knee, and wrist issues that really affected his style of play. He’s played just four singles matches this season, winning just once – in March at the Miami Open. The new-news athlete will return to the singles circuit with the rest of the grass court swing next month. This paves the way for his attendance at Wimbledon.
Kyrgios is must-see television at Grand Slams — except, you know, when he’s not there. His ruthless and unapologetic persona has earned him extreme loyalty as well as extreme opposition. His colorful persona, on and off the court, has intrigued fans ever since, which is why his return to Roland Garros this year would be all the more special.
With a history of ups and downs in his career, Kyrgios’s participation in the French Open doubles could mark a pivotal moment as he aims to regain his footing in professional tennis.
