LAFC and Club America Set for Club World Cup Playoff After Club Leon Disqualification

LAFC and Club America will meet in a winner-takes-all playoff at a date to be determined on May 31. The victor will claim the last berth in this year’s Club World Cup. Club Leon has been kicked out of the tournament for violating ownership regulations. That has left a coveted spot for the 32nd team in the storied event, scheduled for June 14–July 13.

Club Leon’s disqualification follows their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which was denied. The ruling upheld that the release of their ownership rules violation effectively made them ineligible to compete. This agreement opens the door for LAFC and Club America. Like Qatar, they will be hungry to have a go at the opportunity to stand for their confederation at the much-anticipated competition.

LAFC earned their playoff berth as runners-up in the 2023 CONCACAF Champions League, showcasing their strong performance throughout the season. Their compelling stretch run in the league has established them as serious challengers to their imminent playoff opponent. Club America enters the Club World Cup as the best team in the tournament’s confederation ranking. They certainly deserve to be here, having produced a superb campaign in the Champions Cup earlier in 2024.

Combined with both teams’ immense history and large fanbases, this playoff matchup adds a tickish layer of palpable juice. Fans are salivating over that showdown. It pledges to bring high-stakes action, with every club battling to earn their invitation to the international spotlight.

Pachuca, another well-known Mexican club, would be untouched by Club Leon’s disqualification. As a result, they’ll hold onto their first position in the Club World Cup. This way, even as one squad goes home disappointed, the other teams are still on the path to potential victory and success in MegaTournament.

The cost is great, and the message couldn’t be more obvious. Now LAFC and Club America are preparing to face off in what is sure to be a spectacular match-up. The winner will determine which teams move on to battle it out with football’s best. It will be an opportunity to underscore the rising competitiveness of Mexican football on the global stage.
