Brunei Youth Educated on HIV and STDs Through Engaging Workshop

Just last month, students from one of Brunei’s schools participated in a learn more session. The day’s events were aimed at increasing awareness about HIV and other STDs. The workshop, led by Siti Kailene Mohd Jazlan Kashfi, the Project Coordinator for the Health Awareness Project for Youth (HAPPY), provided essential insights into the virus and its prevention.

Siti Kailene reminded us of the need for true education around HIV, as stigma and misinformation always seem to follow the virus. She was able to clarify those different modes of transmission. She reiterated how important it is for young people to know how HIV transmits. That understanding is key to fighting stigma and misinformation on the ground in our communities.

The session, one of the most popular with students, ran smoothly with help from hard working resourceful volunteers from BDAIDSCouncil. Their participation highlighted the consciousness-raising work being done collectively with the youth of Brunei to create a healthier environment for them. While at the workshop, Siti Kailene spoke about some disturbing local statistics regarding the prevalence of HIV in Brunei. Her mission was to create urgency with all the players involved.

In addition to correcting misconceptions about the transmission of HIV, she helped raise awareness about prevention strategies as well. Siti Kailene outlined various methods that can help reduce the risk of contracting the virus, encouraging students to adopt responsible behaviors. By providing them with these tools, she hopes to inspire young people to take control of their own health and make smarter choices.

Siti Kailene reiterated the importance of awareness and education around HIV and STDs as a critical need. She reiterated all of these efforts were critical to people’s health. Beyond their production of affordable homes, they are integral to improving the community’s overall quality of life. The mobilization of youth in the efforts and conversations surrounding these issues is another huge step forward as we work together, we build a more informed society.
