Wei Chong-Kai Wun Claims Historic Malaysian Masters Title

On Sunday, May 25, Wei Chong-Kai Wun won in a big upset. He shocked the more favoured pair of Aaron-Wooi Yik in straight games to win the Malaysian Masters title. The fight was held in the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil. It was a great match after a very physical 50 mins, ending 21-12, 15-21, 21-16. Wei Chong-Kai Wun is the new champion of SEA Games 2023 with this historic achievement! His heir thus becomes the first Malaysian squad to win this contest men’s doubles title since Goh V Shem and Lim Khim Wah attained it in 2013.

It was an impressive display of clutch-shot making and fight from both duos. Wei Chong-Kai Wun jumped out to an early lead, decisively winning the first game. Aaron-Wooi Yik were quick to hit back in the second game, using all their big-match experience to draw the contest level. The final game continued the trend of both players fighting to assert control, but Wei Chong-Kai Wun came out on top.

The significance of this final was a huge breakthrough for Aaron-Wooi Yik. For the first time in history, he made it to the finals in a home tournament! All glory to them — their recent run has been a fantastic one, reaching three finals in as many months. They earned another stunning upset victory at last month’s Asian Championships. Only a week prior to this final, they notched another victory at the Thailand Open.

Despite their loss in the final, Aaron-Wooi Yik’s recent accomplishments highlight their potential as formidable competitors in the badminton arena. In fact, earlier this year, they ended up second in the same competition. They were ultimately eliminated by South Korea’s Kang Min-hyuk and Seo Seung-jae.
