14-time French Open champ Rafael Nadal was given a touching tribute at Roland Garros on Friday. This moment signified the end of an era for one of tennis’s all-time greats. The inaugural ceremony continued on Court Philippe Chatrier. Like for the last 20 years, where Nadal has battled tooth and nail at a high level like nobody else in history. Last year, Nadal announced his retirement from professional tennis. Still, he was able to ponder back on the emotional arc of the tournament that has shaped so much of his pro career.
As he quietly watched the film, leaning on a lectern, many spectators in the stands were moved to tears. The film highlighted his extraordinary accomplishments. It also gave insight into his battles and road rash that made him tough his entire career.
A Celebration of Legacy
The mood was electric when Nadal came out on the court. He danced his way up to the classic beat of the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive.” A passionate crowd packed the stadium, singing “Rafa!” Their enthusiasm sparked a chain reaction of excitement that rolled through the packed grandstands like a Mexican wave. Some 10,000 Rafa fans donned ‘Merci Rafa’ T-shirts. They paid tribute to his service to the game of tennis at-large and underscored his profound connection to the French crowd.
A humble and sometimes emotional Nadal thanked the Hall and took a look back upon his legendary career in his acceptance speech. His voice choking with feeling, he started to speak in French, declaring, “Merci beaucoup.” He shared sentiments about his journey, stating, “I don’t know where to start after playing on that court for the last 20 years, after enjoying, suffering, winning, losing and especially after having felt so many feelings every time I’ve had the chance to be here.”
The Road to Greatness
Nadal’s career in tennis has certainly faced its share of adversity. He shared the story of a major foot injury he suffered in 2004 that left him barely able to walk. That’s me on the right, even though I could hardly walk back in 2004 with my foot steadily deteriorating from injury. On crutches, I climbed to the top of the court to be able to serve. I had my eyes set on returning the next year,” he remembered. This resoluteness of spirit would eventually see him through to his first appearance at Roland Garros in 2005.
The stirring tribute reached its emotional high-point on Saturday morning as they unveiled a permanent memorial. In another, they embossed Nadal’s footprint into the clay of Court Philippe Chatrier. This legacy will continue to pay tribute to his contributions to the sport and celebrate his extraordinary accomplishments at Roland Garros.
A Special Reunion
It was a star-studded reunion as tennis legends came back to the steamship. Nadal was able to share that stage with fellow icons Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Roger Federer. This meeting of the Big Four was as much a celebration of their successes and shared history together over the years.
In his emotional acceptance speech, Nadal paid tribute to the people who helped him along the way. He acknowledged his coach, Toni Nadal, saying, “Toni, you’re the reason why I’m here. You dedicated a great part of your life to make me suffer, laugh and push my limits. It wasn’t easy but it was worth it. My infinite gratitude for all the sacrifices you made for me.”
