Judge Strikes Down Trump’s Executive Order Targeting Top Law Firm

Ordinarily, that would have been a huge victory delivered by U.S. District Judge Richard Leon. He opposed an executive order by former President Donald Trump which specifically went after the well-known law firm WilmerHale. That statement from the judge was stated in the context of a court proceeding in Washington, D.C. He claimed that if they permitted the order to remain, they would be hijacking the Founding Fathers’ vision for the United States.

Judge Leon emphasized the importance of an independent judiciary, highlighting that it is “the cornerstone of the American system of justice.” He argued that the legal framework must support an independent bar willing to take on challenging cases, regardless of their popularity. This comment was made as apprehension grew about the independence of legal institutions after politically motivated attacks.

Judge Leon gave the administration a scathing opinion, and ruled that the executive order was unconstitutional. He noted that it betrayed the very core principles that our country was built upon. He remarked, “To let Trump’s order stand would be unfaithful to the judgment and vision of the Founding Fathers!” His decision is part of a larger, national effort to ensure and defend judicial independence, and to keep lawyers and judges from being bullied and influenced.

As a reminder, during his presidency, Trump signed an executive order. Importantly, it specifically and directly targeted WilmerHale for its representation of clients in high-profile cases that he considered to be detrimental to his administration. The law firm has made headlines for fighting on behalf of some of the most controversial clients. Trump’s actions appeared to be a direct reaction to the firm’s legal work.

As Judge Leon implored the court, once again, “The Founding Fathers understood this!” This quote highlighted his conviction that historical experiences and constitutional safeguards are key to preventing a biased justice system.

During a separate public appearance on May 26, 2025, at the National Memorial Day Observance in Arlington, Virginia, Trump gestured toward his ongoing efforts to reshape legal norms in America. This recent ruling serves as a significant brake on those efforts. It makes the case, again, for the vital priority of an independent legal system.
