While Xcimer Energy is laser-focused on making fusion power a reality, Focused Energy recently purchased two of the world’s most powerful lasers to power its audacious search for fusion.
In a first-of-its-kind step, Focused Energy’s recent purchase of high-capacity laser systems represents a critical progression in their research. These lasers take a ridiculously large 300 megajoules of energy to make them work at all. Once operational, these systems will be free to deploy 192 extremely lethal laser beams. Their goal will be the tiniest of pellets placed within a spherical vacuum chamber that is 10-meters across. This first-of-its-kind technique aims to create the ultra hot, super compressed conditions required for nuclear fusion.
In November of last year, the historic experiment crossed a key threshold with an output of 3.15 megajoules. The lasers were the most important element, providing 2.05 megajoules to the BB-size fuel pellet. This achievement represented the first controlled fusion reaction that produced more energy than it consumed, raising hopes for the future of sustainable energy solutions.
