Anthropic Unveils New API for Web-Enhanced AI Capabilities

That means Anthropic has officially launched a new API into production. This most recent update gives its Claude AI models the ability to perform web searches, further expanding its capabilities. This update, announced on May 7, 2025, at 4:28 PM PDT, allows Anthropic Claude to generate search queries, retrieve results, analyze the data, and provide users with answers complete with citations if it chooses to tap into the vast resources of the web.

Anthropic Claude Code now has web search abilities built into it. Now, it can tap into up-to-the-minute API documentation, technical articles, and other key real-time documentation unique to development tools and libraries. This improvement makes Anthropic’s capabilities a strong option for developers looking to incorporate real-time information into their apps.

Developers now have the flexibility to enable or restrict web search functionalities at the organizational level. This gives them the confidence that they can give specific instructions to modify the AI’s behavior for unique applications. You can define the domains Anthropic Claude can crawl. Or, you can just outright deny it access to specific domains. The API makes it possible to query much more complex information. This enables Claude to conduct several searches and base previous results on the subsequent searches.

“Developers can now augment Claude’s comprehensive knowledge with current, real-world data by enabling the web search tool when making requests to our API,” stated a representative from Anthropic. Furthermore, they highlighted that “with web search, developers can now build AI solutions that tap into current information without needing to manage their own web search infrastructure.”

We hope the release of this API will help others build their own Claude-powered applications to provide users with immediate, contextually relevant insights and information. Anthropic Claude Code is in beta as a research preview. This advanced configuration provides a unique opportunity for developers to test and push the limits of its capabilities while providing valuable feedback for enhancements.

The news coincides with excitement for our own Startup Battlefield at our next TC event in Berkeley, California, on June 5. Attendees will have a chance to try out the new features from Anthropic Claude and talk about the latest breakthroughs in AI technology. Developers and developers looking to do business with developers can reserve their spot today.
