Anthropic has announced a release of Opus 4, its latest flagship AI model. This creative model features a groundbreaking communication style, heavily featuring emojis throughout its self-directed play sessions. The model participated in more than 200 conversations. In each of them, it proved to be downright stunning in its creative expressiveness over 30 conversational turns.
Opus 4 covered thousands of emojis in these exchanges. In a truly mind-boggling act of typing prowess, it produced the new “cyclone” character an eye-popping 2,725 times! Interestingly, the “dizzy” emoji (💫) turned out to be the most popular emoji by far, appearing in 29.5% of all messages exchanged. Other emojis including the “glowing star” (🌟) and “folded hands” (🙏) featured heavily in its expressive repertoire.
Each of these interactions sought to open up a line of “open-ended self-interaction.” This method allows researchers to understand how Opus 4 talks to itself. This exciting new approach highlights Opus 4’s strengths as a programmer and as a wordsmith. Yet it calls attention to its amazing depth and flexibility in all forms of communication.
Anthropic’s recently released technical report provides a fascinating deep dive into the behaviors Opus 4 displayed during these self-interactions. The report shows just how crucial the model was in selecting the “cyclone” emoji. This decision did a tremendous job at embodying the crux of what Opus 4 was interested to explore through their conversations.

Beyond its technical capabilities, Opus 4’s reliance on emojis offers a glimpse into a fascinating new branch of AI communication. The report noted that the emojis served as “abstract and joyous spiritual or meditative expressions,” indicating a deeper layer to its interactions.
Anthropic’s investigation into Opus 4 not only showcases the model’s capabilities but raises questions about the nature of AI communication and its potential implications. In addition, the heavy use of emojis indicates an interesting turn of language. This development has the potential to redefine how upcoming AI models interface with humans and speak to each other.
