Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysia's Prime Minister, has taken an unconventional step by appointing Thaksin Shinawatra, the former Thai premier, as the chair of a newly formed informal advisory group for ASEAN. This decision, characterized by analysts as "unusual" and "maverick," aims to provide guidance on intricate regional issues, including the ongoing crisis in Myanmar. The group's informal nature means it operates outside of the formal ASEAN structure but offers strategic advice to ASEAN leaders.
The advisory group, which includes notable figures such as George Yeo, a former Singapore foreign affairs minister, held its inaugural meeting over dinner on February 2, 2023. Anwar, Thaksin, Yeo, and other group members were present to discuss various topics, including cryptocurrency and digital finance. The Malaysian government is considering drafting a policy on digital finance, potentially recognizing cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology in the country.
Anwar initiated discussions about the advisory group with the United Arab Emirates government and cryptocurrency leader Binance before formalizing Thaksin's appointment. Thaksin's involvement is closely linked to his understanding of Myanmar's political situation and his extensive connections within the country. Despite his controversial past, including convictions for corruption and abuse of power in Thailand, Thaksin's expertise is seen as valuable for navigating the complex political landscape of Southeast Asia.
While George Yeo's official status within the advisory panel remains unclear, his potential membership highlights the group's broad range of expertise. Anwar has only confirmed Thaksin’s role as chair and noted Yeo as a possible member. The group's composition suggests a diverse array of perspectives and experiences that may benefit ASEAN's approach to regional challenges.
