Anwar Ibrahim’s Strategic Push: Bolstering the GCC Trade Alliance

Anwar Ibrahim, as chair of the 10-member Asean bloc, is making strategic moves to strengthen ties with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), a trade alliance consisting of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. The GCC collectively represents the world's ninth-largest economies with a combined value of US$2 trillion. Anwar's efforts aim to enhance the trade alliance with the GCC to ensure Asean's strategic relevance in a multipolar world.

Anwar's initiative comes at a time when global economic dynamics are shifting. By focusing on the GCC, Anwar seeks to leverage its vast economic reach, which spans China's massive economy and Asean itself. This move is part of his broader strategy to position Asean proactively on the global stage, ensuring that it remains an integral player in international trade and economic discussions.

As the chair of Asean, Anwar is driven by the need to diversify and strengthen trade ties. This initiative with the GCC is not only about economic benefits but also about maintaining Asean's influence and strategic importance amidst global power shifts. The GCC, being a significant economic bloc, presents an opportunity for Asean to expand its economic partnerships and fortify its economic landscape.

Sam Baron, a research fellow at Japan's Yokosuka Council on Asia-Pacific Studies, commented on Anwar's efforts, noting the importance of enhancing the GCC trade alliance. His insights underscore the significance of such strategic moves in maintaining Asean's relevance in today's rapidly changing world economy.

"Rather, it is about ensuring Asean’s strategic relevance in a multipolar world," – Anwar Ibrahim

The GCC's considerable economic clout, reflected in its US$2 trillion valuation, offers a substantial opportunity for Asean under Anwar's leadership. By fostering closer ties with this influential group, Asean can potentially unlock new trade avenues and collaborative opportunities that would benefit both regions.
