Apple Maps is set to follow in Google's footsteps by renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, complying with a recent executive order from U.S. President Donald Trump. The change is anticipated to roll out for U.S.-based Apple users as soon as Tuesday, with plans to extend the update to users in other countries shortly thereafter.
This move aligns with similar modifications already made by Google Maps, which now displays the dual name "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)" for its global user base. However, Google Maps retains the respective names for Mexican and American users, reflecting each country's preference. The decision is rooted in a directive from the sitting U.S. president, aiming to adjust geographical naming conventions.
The Gulf of Mexico, a crucial body of water for both trade and tourism in the Americas, has long been recognized under its traditional name.
