Atletico Madrid Aims for Improvement as LaLiga Campaign Concludes

Diego Simeone, manager of Atletico Madrid, is equally intent on bridging the gap with their LaLiga neighbours. In the closing weeks of the season, he has doubled down on his team’s steadfast dedication to this aim. Atletico Madrid are third with 70 points from 35 games, four behind the champions. They are currently in third place with 75 points, trailing leaders Barcelona by 7 points and Real Madrid by seven points in second place. With the LaLiga campaign nearing its end, Atletico Madrid aims to finish strong and reflects on its previous success in the league.

Simeone noted that Atletico Madrid was in first place in the LaLiga table at the midway point of their season. The team has faced challenges since that time. The team’s most recent championship was in 2021, so he let it be known that he is looking for better results in the future. In every season, you do something different – like last year when we brought in new talent – and next year you’ll do something different again, but it’s always the same idea, looking for improvement,” he stated.

Admiration for Ancelotti

In a recent joint press conference, Simeone had nothing but praise for his counterpart, Carlo Ancelotti. He extended his praise for the Real Madrid manager’s extraordinary accomplishments. Given Ancelotti’s long career and work making contributions to the game, he made a clear distinction that he respected him as the coach.

“As a coach, we all have admiration for his work, not only for everything he managed at Real Madrid, but for his entire sporting career. I’m an admirer of his, I love him very much, he knows that and I wish him all the best,” – Diego Simeone

This phrase encapsulates the enormous respect amongst coaching compatriots in LaLiga, even in the heat of battle.

Preparing for the Club World Cup

For Simeone, the only thing in their path now is the upcoming Club World Cup. This highly selective international tournament comes to the US this summer, from June 14 – July 13. Atletico Madrid of Spain will be participating in this new expanded, 32-team format and they hope to do their club justice.

As Simeone noted after winning that a win in this tournament would be hugely meaningful for the team. He explained that the prize money on the line is intended to serve as an incentive for others to enter the race. For us, it’s a fantastic tournament where we proudly wear the colors of Atletico, and we want to show up in the best shape possible.

In preparation for their participation, Atletico Madrid has made several key signings over the past season, including Julian Alvarez, Conor Gallagher, Robin Le Normand, and Alexander Sorloth. These signings are a testament to Simeone’s philosophy of hardening the backline as Atletico Madrid chase more glory on Spanish soil and across Europe.

Upcoming Match Against Osasuna

With the LaLiga season nearing an end, Atletico Madrid will have a critical matchup against Osasuna, who sit 11th in the table. This fixture provides a chance for Atletico to shore up their position in the table as they turn their eyes towards next season’s Competitions.

In sum, Simeone’s management still claims to drive Atletico Madrid to the edge of progress and contention. We are a club built around winning championships here at home first and foremost. Yet at the same time, it seeks to showcase huge progress on the international stage in the months ahead.
