Augusta National Golf Club has long been known as a home of the exclusive and prestigious Masters Tournament. After Hurricane Ian decimated the island last September, the club has undergone some remarkable transformation. Hurricane Florence took down thousands of trees along the route. This shocked the contrast and world into a million pieces and opened up brand new challenges and opportunities for all of the players involved. The golf world is abuzz in anticipation of the upcoming event. Players are eagerly offering their ideas about how these changes will impact their tactics and experiences on the legendary layout.
The dramatic removal of trees has dramatically changed past Augusta National. Today, the view seems more spacious in places where those pines surged upward. Players have been vocal about how the changes have drastically altered the way the course looks. As Cameron Smith noted, the course is a lot more airy compared to previous years. To that end, he stressed the biggest, most visible changes that fans and fellow competitors might immediately be able to see.
A Fresh Perspective on the Course
The most noticeable modification is at the par-4 10th. An opening on the left side has allowed players to exploit this new rule with a new option for their shots. Xander Schauffele highlighted this new strategy, stating, “Off (No.) 10, for example, if you are feeling extremely dangerous, there’s a little gap on the left side of the trees where you can kind of hit it through.” He acknowledged that while this presents an opportunity, it carries a degree of risk, adding, “I think it’s a little risky, but in the past your ball would hit a tree there and fall 90 feet from the tee box.”
The addition of more options for players on important holes has drawn excitement from the players themselves. Schauffele remarked on how the overall experience of playing the course feels different this year: “it almost felt like I was playing the back nine for the first time.” Prior knowledge of the course is highly beneficial. Players need to get used to its revamped design.
New Greens and Enhanced Playability
Augusta National has already taken great hits with the trees that were lost to the hurricane. To reimagine the course, they’ve installed four entirely new greens on holes 1, 8, 15 and 16. Rory McIlroy pointed out these enhancements by stating, “You’ve got the four new greens on 1, 8, 15 and 16.” The new greens play beautifully and add to an all-around sense of renewal on this course.
With Mr. Arnold, Fred Couples was a second professional, who strongly supported this sentiment by explaining the aesthetic effect these changes would have. He marveled, “Like the other day, when we played against the guys who were No. While you’re standing on the green, you can see these huge areas of a lot more space on the ninth tee. I think that’s kind of cool. You can watch people hit.” This increased visibility adds a unique spectator experience to the tournament.
Even with the reality of all the trees killed by Hurricane Ian, Couples continued to sound bullish on the state of the course. He continued, “I understand that many trees fell. I understand that this town was Ground Zero and affected beyond imagination, but that golf course is outrageous. His view is representative of the game at large that believes not just in the history, but the bounce back ability of Augusta National.
Anticipation for Masters Week
As Masters Week approaches, players are preparing to navigate these new dynamics while competing on one of golf’s most revered stages. The mix of lost, dead greens and new, lush greens understates some tricky factors that are likely to affect play styles the rest of the tournament.
Many of the competitors expressed concern over the hazards of navigating through tunnels and utilizing the new greens. Some consider these adjustments to be new and exhilarating chances for inventive shot-making. With the recent changes at Augusta National there could be an interesting new style of play this year. Look for a unique experience as compared to prior finals tournaments!
