Moses Lim, a beloved figure in the Singaporean entertainment industry, passed away on February 11 at the age of 75. Best known for his role as Tan Ah Teck on the iconic English sitcom "Under One Roof," Lim was a versatile comedian and host who left an indelible mark on local television. His unexpected passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and fans alike, including heartfelt messages from longtime friend and collaborator Jack Neo.
Lim's career spanned decades, with memorable performances that included playing a Peranakan auntie in Jack Neo's variety show "Comedy Nite" during the 1990s. He was a prominent member of JTeam, a comedy group that also featured talents such as Mark Lee, Henry Thia, and Patricia Mok. Known for his linguistic dexterity, Lim often performed in both English and Mandarin, a skill Jack Neo fondly recalled in his tribute.
"We partnered in various big and small performances and immersed ourselves in laughter and applause. Your command of the English language is better than mine and we would always host in English and Mandarin — a perfect combination." – Jack
Beyond entertainment, Lim was also a passionate food critic and the founder of the Moses Lim Gourmet Club, which organized food tours for culinary enthusiasts. His love for food was as much a part of his public persona as his comedic roles.
In 2018, Lim underwent heart surgery, and earlier this year, he faced another health scare. His cardiologist had noted that his pulse was slower than normal, prompting a six-month period of health observation. Fortunately, his condition stabilized without the need for a pacemaker.
Despite these health challenges, Lim maintained an active presence in the local community. His last social media post on February 10 showcased a luncheon with friends from the hospitality industry, a testament to his enduring connections and zest for life.
Jack Neo expressed profound sorrow over the loss of his "old friend," highlighting their shared journey from mere acquaintances to close partners in comedy.
"You are my best partner. You were respectful of others and considerate towards them. You took care of each member of the JTeam and never gave anyone pressure." – Jack
Lim's passing serves as a poignant reminder of life's fragility, underscored by Jack Neo's reflections on age and mortality.
"We all have to face old age, illness and death. We can only hope to support and take care of each other while we are alive. What's most important is that we brought happiness to everyone." – Jack
Lim is survived by his wife Monica, two daughters, and four granddaughters. His contributions to Singapore's entertainment landscape are celebrated not only by his family but by generations of fans who grew up watching his work.
"Moses Lim, who brought endless laughter and joy to generations of Singaporeans, has taken his final bow, leaving behind a legacy that sparkles as brightly as his unforgettable smile," – Moses Lim's Facebook page
