Chen Tianwen, a well-known 63-year-old actor, has recently revealed his personal struggle with sleep apnoea, a condition characterized by repeated pauses in breathing during sleep. The revelation came during a candid radio interview where he discussed his diagnosis and treatment. His wife first alerted him to the issue due to his severe snoring, a common symptom of sleep apnoea, shortly after their marriage.
Sleep apnoea is a serious health concern that affects many individuals worldwide. Chen Tianwen discovered his condition after undergoing medical evaluation, where it was revealed that he stopped breathing 59 times in an hour. While some patients can experience up to 80 interruptions per hour, Chen's condition was deemed not severe. Despite this, he decided to take proactive steps to manage his health.
Chen Tianwen opted for surgery to treat his sleep apnoea. Notably, the procedure involved removing a part of his body that will naturally regenerate in a few years. This temporary solution appealed to him as it offered immediate relief while allowing his body to heal over time. In addition to surgery, he also relies on a respirator mask, which he wears during sleep.
"The doctors told me I stopped breathing 59 times in an hour… They gave me two choices, to go for surgery or wear a respirator to sleep," said Chen Tianwen.
The use of the respirator has proven effective, although it is not without minor inconveniences. The mask's straps leave visible marks on Chen's face each morning, a cosmetic issue he views as the sole downside of his treatment.
"The only negative thing is that there will be marks [from the straps on the mask] on my face every morning when I wake up," Chen Tianwen remarked.
Chen's openness about his experience with sleep apnoea aims to raise awareness about the condition and encourage others who might be suffering from similar symptoms to seek medical advice. His decision to undergo surgery and use a respirator reflects a commitment to maintaining his health and quality of life.
