China’s Call for Peace: Xi Jinping Supports Russia’s Efforts in the Ukraine Crisis

Chinese President Xi Jinping commended Russia for its "positive efforts to defuse" the ongoing Ukraine crisis during a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Initiated by Putin, the conversation marked a significant diplomatic exchange as both leaders discussed the conflict that has persisted for three years since Putin's decision to initiate a "special military operation" in Ukraine. Xi expressed his support for dialogue between Russia and the United States and reiterated China's readiness to assist in finding a peaceful resolution.

Xi's remarks came on the anniversary of what is considered Europe's largest conflict since World War II. Despite international pressure, Beijing maintains a close political and economic partnership with Moscow. China has not condemned Russia's actions in Ukraine, leading some NATO members to label the nation an "enabler" of the conflict. However, Xi emphasized that "history and reality" illustrate the strong bond between China and Russia.

"China is happy to see Russia and relevant parties make positive efforts to defuse the crisis in Ukraine."

In the conversation, Putin briefed Xi on recent talks between Russian and U.S. officials held in Saudi Arabia. These discussions were notable as the first high-level meeting between the two nations since Russia's military intervention in Ukraine began. Xi expressed contentment over the progress, highlighting the importance of these initial steps towards easing tensions.

China has positioned itself as a neutral party in the Ukraine conflict while simultaneously strengthening military and trade ties with Russia. This stance has not gone unnoticed by international observers, particularly NATO, which sees China's actions as supportive of Russia. Despite this perception, China continues to advocate for dialogue and peaceful negotiations.

"History and reality show the two countries are good neighbours that cannot be moved away, and true friends who share weal and woe, support each other and achieve common development."
— Xi Jinping

As a close ally, Beijing remains committed to fostering a diplomatic resolution to the crisis. The call between Xi and Putin underscores the enduring relationship between China and Russia, highlighting their shared commitment to mutual support and development. While China has sought to present itself as impartial, its strategic affiliations and diplomatic overtures signal a complex balance of interests.
