The Department of Angels has launched a new grassroots program aimed at helping residents in Altadena and Pacific Palisades rebuild after the devastating wildfires. This community-driven network is a collaborative effort between Snap CEO Evan Spiegel, Miguel Santana, chief executive of the California Community Foundation, and other organizations. Unlike traditional government or private-sector initiatives, this program emphasizes giving control back to the impacted communities.
The initiative is backed by $10 million in funding, contributed by Snap, the California Community Foundation, Spiegel himself, and Snap CTO Bobby Murphy. The funds will be used to staff the program and provide independent resources and project management support to residents. By working alongside existing community leaders and organizations, the program seeks to empower residents to rebuild on their own terms.
“Our purpose is to ensure that the communities impacted by the Eaton and Palisades megafires steward their own recovery,” – The Department of Angels
Spiegel, who has personal ties to the area, having grown up in the Palisades, took a heartfelt approach to this initiative. Following last month's wildfires, he penned a letter to the Los Angeles community, expressing his commitment to supporting meaningful and sustainable recovery efforts. This program represents a concerted effort by Spiegel and his collaborators to provide more than just financial aid; they aim to offer a framework for long-term resilience.
The Department of Angels stands as a testament to the power of community collaboration. It strives to not only assist in rebuilding physical structures but also in restoring the social fabric of these areas. By engaging with existing community entities, the program ensures that local knowledge and leadership are central to the recovery process.
