COP30 to Spotlight Climate Action as Brazil’s Diplomat Takes Helm

In a pivotal appointment, Brazilian diplomat Andre Correa do Lago has been named President of the upcoming COP30 climate summit. As preparations for this significant event gain momentum, do Lago has lauded China's "extraordinary progress" in combating climate change. The summit, set to be held in November in the Amazon city of Belem, will mark the first climate conference convened in the lush backdrop of the rainforest. However, do Lago warns that progress towards global clean energy transition could face hurdles without substantial support from the United States.

Andre Correa do Lago, a seasoned climate expert, brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having represented Brazil at every international climate summit since President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's return to power in January 2023. As he prepares to chair the next United Nations climate summit, do Lago has been vocal about the need for developed countries to honor their responsibilities under the 2015 Paris Agreement. He criticized wealthy nations for attempting to reduce their financial contributions to the global fight against climate change, describing such actions as "deeply wrong."

"By reducing the price of solar panels and of electric cars, China is giving infinitely more support to the developing world (on climate change) than if it were just providing symbolic amounts (of aid), which is what the developed countries want." – Andre Correa do Lago

Do Lago commended China for setting a commendable example in climate action, highlighting its role in making renewable technologies more accessible and affordable. In contrast, he admonished rich countries for their reluctance to fulfill their climate commitments, urging them to enhance support for developing nations' energy transitions. At the COP30 meeting, he aims to push developed nations to step up their financial backing, emphasizing the necessity for countries with historical responsibilities to take a greater role in financing these efforts.

"We have to work so that countries with historical responsibilities play a greater role in the financial aspect." – Andre Correa do Lago

As COP30 approaches, the focus will be on galvanizing collective action and ensuring financial commitments align with the ambitious targets set out by international agreements. Hosting the summit in the heart of the Amazon rainforest underscores the urgency and importance of protecting vital ecosystems while advancing global climate goals.
