Cornal Hendricks, Former South Africa Winger, Dies at 37

Cornal Hendricks, the former Springbok rugby winger, just a few days ago was sadly found deceased. He passed away from a heart attack at the age of 37. His passing was confirmed by SA Rugby on Thursday, sending shockwaves through the rugby world. Hendricks had a phenomenal career spanning more than 17 years. Stannard reached out-of-this-world heights in both sevens and fifteeman rugby.

Hendricks made 12 appearances in the colors of the South African national rugby union team, touching down five times in his international career. In addition, he was an incredibly important player for South Africa’s sevens team, helping them win Olympic gold and many more titles. During his time as the national coach, perhaps most memorably, he guided teams to gold medal wins at the 2013 World Games and 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Career Highlights and Contributions

During his matches as a professional cricketer, Hendricks played in 233 first-class matches. His versatility and skill on the field made him a standout player, earning him respect among teammates and opponents alike. Hendricks was diagnosed with a serious heart condition that forced his retirement in 2015. It should not negate the amazing return to rugby by Vilimoni Koroi in 2019. His resolve to battle back from serious health issues was a testament to his love of the game.

Mark Alexander, president of SA Rugby, said it was with great sadness that he learned of Hendricks’ death. He called Hendricks one of the most exceptional athletes. Hendricks represented South Africa with distinction in the abbreviated code of sevens and the full code of fifteen-man rugby.

“We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Cornal Hendricks, a remarkable athlete who represented his country in sevens and fifteen-man rugby with distinction,” – Mark Alexander

A Legacy of Passion and Dedication

He wasn’t just an athletic marvel. Hendricks played with a musician’s passion for the game. Colleagues and admirers recall his commitment to the game and passion for hard work. It was not just on-field positivity. He was a genuinely good human. Alexander described the profound effect that Hendricks’ spirit had on everyone he met.

“Cornal was one of those players who loved the game and he worked extremely hard, but he always did so with a smile on his face… our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife Stephaney and their children, his family, friends, and teammates.” – Mark Alexander

The passing of Cornal Hendricks hits hard in the rugby fraternity. Those who saw him play or counted him as a friend will never forget his accomplishments and colorful personality. Even after his passing, he left a great impact on their lives.
