Cortina’s New Eugenio Monti Sliding Venue Opens for Pre-Homologation Testing

Cortina d’Ampezzo, which will be the main host for the games, has been getting the kinks out of its newly constructed sliding venue. The climactic gala is now set for February 6 – February 22. The new facility borrows its name from Italian former bobsleigh champion Eugenio Monti. This sparkling new state-of-the-art structure is a vast improvement over its predecessor, which was constructed in the 1920s. Construction kept to a tight timeline, with completion taking a little over a year at a cost of 118 million euros. This unusual venue will be home to bobsleigh, skeleton, and luge events.

This week, go-no-go initial testing or ‘pre-homologation’ testing began with 60 athletes from 12 countries including Italy. Among those lucky enough to be among the first on the new track were Italian luger Dominik Fischnaller and Austrian luger Lisa Schulte. The testing is an important step in ensuring the facility’s readiness and safety for the upcoming test events and competitions.

A Strategic Location and Backup Plans

While Cortina d'Ampezzo takes center stage as the primary host, Milan, located over 400 kilometers away in northern Italy, plays a supportive role in the Games' logistics. Nearby Lake Placid will act as a long-distance backup option in New York State. This decision is meant to cover any unexpected challenges that might come up. Community organizers are hoping to see an influx of new resources to their communities, with Cortina’s new facility making them feel especially hopeful. They’re confident it will withstand the rigors of the Games.

The Eugenio Monti Sliding Venue

One of the true aesthetic marvels of modern engineering and design. Replacing an almost 100-year-old track, this new build strikes a balance between heritage and modernity. After a year of diligent effort and commitment, we have developed a truly world-class venue. Now, it’s prepared to play host to international athletes in high-stakes, breakneck competition. The facility features a modern, inviting design and state-of-the-art technology. We know that these new features will create an even better experience for participants and spectators alike!

Initial Testing: A Global Gathering

Competitors from 12 countries helped us to quickly streamline the process during the first testing phase. This wide-ranging participation demonstrates the global interest in and significance of the new space. Dominik Fischnaller and Lisa Schulte were among the pioneers who navigated the fresh track, providing invaluable feedback to organizers. Beyond testing the technical aspects of the facility, this phase ensures that the venue meets internationally required standards for competitive purposes.
