Crafting Tradition and Innovation: Indonesian Designer Singgih Kartono’s Journey

Singgih Kartono, a renowned product designer from Indonesia, has garnered attention for his innovative creations that blend tradition with modern design. Kartono's work is most closely associated with three remarkable projects: the Magno wooden radio, the Spedagi bamboo bike, and the Pasar Papringan market. His journey began with a simple pocket-sized magnifying glass, evolving into a career that champions sustainability, functionality, and aesthetic appeal.

In 2004, after returning to his hometown of Temanggung from Bandung, Kartono established his company, Piranti Works. It was here that he developed the Magno wooden radio, a product that later won the Japan Good Design Award in 2008. Priced at IDR 2 million (S$194) locally and around €260 (S$364) overseas, the Magno radio exemplifies Kartono's design philosophy: creating long-lasting products that are as beautiful as they are functional.

“The first wooden product that I marketed was a pocket-sized magnifying glass. That’s where the name Magno comes from,” – Kartono

Kartono's interest in bicycle design emerged in 2012 when he adopted cycling as part of his daily routine. Surrounded by the abundant bamboo trees in Kandangan, Kartono envisioned a sustainable mode of transportation that could also serve as a social movement. Thus, the Spedagi bamboo bike was born. The name Spedagi combines "sepeda" (bike) and "pagi" (morning), reflecting Kartono's hope for community involvement and a shift in perception of village life.

“As a product designer, I need to do something about overconsumption. I have to build something that looks good, functions well, and lasts a long time from the resources that are available around Temanggung.” – Kartono

Kartono believes villages are unique environments rich with life lessons and untapped potential. He hopes Spedagi can transform villages into sustainable living spaces recognized for education and craftsmanship rather than being perceived as underdeveloped. His company collaborates with local artisans in producing bamboo bikes, providing them with valuable skills and a stake in the production process.

“Oftentimes, when we think of villages, we associate them with things that are behind in terms of civilisation.” – Kartono

“We seem to have forgotten about the village’s way of living — the respectful way to treat one another, the deep appreciation towards processes, the gratitude towards the natural things we are blessed with, the good air and ample space we live in.” – Kartono

The Pasar Papringan market is another testament to Kartono's dedication to community and sustainability. Held twice a month beneath a lush bamboo forest in Temanggung, the market attracts over 3,000 visitors regularly. Initially met with local hesitation, Pasar Papringan has become a vibrant hub celebrating traditional crafts and local produce.

“When we first reached out to the locals to participate in Pasar Papringan, we faced a lot of hesitation,” – Yudhi Setiawan

Kartono's efforts extend beyond product design; they encompass a broader vision for what he calls "New Craft." This movement aims to combat brain drain by revitalizing rural areas through sustainable practices and creative industries.

“There is wisdom in the village, and I believe its values are the future of humanity,” – Kartono

“It’s not something new, but I feel that New Craft could be the answer to the brain drain that Temanggung, and other villages around the world, are facing.” – Kartono

Kartono's designs are versatile, transcending fleeting trends while maintaining their relevance and utility. The Spedagi bike is not just a means of transportation but a symbol of innovation rooted in tradition. Through it, Kartono envisions a world where villages play a crucial role in shaping sustainable futures.

“It is a good challenge to create a good product in terms of aesthetic and functionality using simple technology,” – Abi Rafdy Ramadhan
