Dakar Legend Peterhansel Returns to Rallying with Jaguar Land Rover’s Defender

Stephane Peterhansel, world famous as “Mr. Dakar,” is returning to the Dakar Rally in what’s perhaps the most highly anticipated return ever. He’s due back in next January when he turns 60. Peterhansel, who has a record 14 wins to his name, will race for Jaguar Land Rover’s Defender brand. It’s a can’t-miss event—and this year it will be held in Saudi Arabia. His involvement would be a historic moment in rallying, as he seeks to further build upon his legendary legacy.

2023 marked Peterhansel’s final participation in the Dakar Rally. Sadly, he never got to race, as Audi pulled out of the event. His passion for rallying remains undiminished. The experienced driver will be taking on the whole World Rally-Raid Championship. They will all race in the Stock category, known for production-based vehicles that compete around the world.

A Record Holder’s Journey

Peterhansel owns the most victories in the history of the Dakar Rally, winning 14 crowns since his first appearance. He rockets to six phenomenal championship championships between 1991 and 1998, reeling off these motorcycle championships wins before switching over to cars in 1999. Over the course of his long career, he has taken wins with famous manufacturers including Mitsubishi, Mini and Peugeot.

“My new objective is to never stop racing at the top level,” said Peterhansel. “I’m looking forward to taking on this new challenge and together I hope we can take Defender to the top step of the podium.” His resolve and track record place him as a strong contender in the recently announced rally to prevent such a decline.

The Road Ahead

Jaguar Land Rover has announced 25-year-old Rokas Baciuska from Lithuania as their new signing. They are looking forward to joining Peterhansel to the team. The third driver announced and the co-drivers for Peterhansel are forthcoming, the team said. As he prepares for his 36th Dakar Rally! Don’t miss what fans and competitors can already feel buzzing in the air as he makes his highly anticipated return!

Carlos Sainz has a big, proud smile because he is the oldest Dakar Rally winner ever. At 61 years young, he captured his fourth consecutive win in 2024! The importance of this milestone cannot be overstated for Peterhansel. As he gears up to turn 60 this August, he gets ready for yet another difficult journey through some of motorsports’ most brutal landscapes.

A New Era for Defender

Famous rally racer Stephane Peterhansel is back in full effect! After a successful reopening of Jaguar Land Rover’s Defender brand in the world of rallying, it’ll be a new beginning. As they go about setting up a base six competitive presence in the new World Rally-Raid Championship, Peterhansel’s wealth of experience will help them immeasurably.
