Barbie Hsu, a beloved Taiwanese actress, passed away on February 2 at the age of 48 due to pneumonia caused by complications from the flu. Her sudden demise has left her family and fans in deep mourning. Following her cremation in Japan, Barbie's ashes were transported back to Taiwan on a private flight on February 5. Her husband, DJ Koo, expressed profound grief over her passing and took to social media to honor her memory and address ongoing controversies.
DJ Koo shared his sorrow through a heartfelt post, emphasizing the irreplaceable nature of their shared moments. He conveyed gratitude for the time they spent together and vowed to protect everything she cherished. However, the circumstances surrounding Barbie's death and the handling of her remains have sparked disputes and rumors.
"My time with Barbie cannot be replaced by anything else in the world as it is the most precious and treasured gift. I want to protect everything that Barbie loved, that's the last thing I can do." – DJ Koo
DJ Koo claimed that Wang Xiaofei, Barbie's ex-husband, arranged and paid for the private plane transporting Barbie's ashes. This statement was contested by Barbie's sister, Dee Hsu, who affirmed that their family and her husband had managed the arrangements. The situation became further complicated as a Chinese influencer, rumored to be Zhang Lan's godson, uploaded a video on Douyin supporting Xiaofei's involvement.
Amidst these disputes, DJ Koo revealed that Barbie left NT$650 million ($26.7 million) worth of assets to him and their two children, Hsi-lin and Hsi-yueh. He outlined his intentions for distributing these assets but refrained from providing specific details.
"For the precious assets that Barbie had left, all of them, which she had earned with painstaking effort for the family she loved most in her lifetime, I want to transfer all my rights to her mother." – DJ Koo
"Regarding the inheritance that her children deserve, I hope that under the supervision of a lawyer, their rights can be properly protected." – DJ Koo
The public discourse intensified with rumors circulating on social media, suggesting DJ Koo had purchased multiple insurance policies for Barbie prior to her death, with a supposed maximum value of NT$200 million. DJ Koo refuted these claims and criticized those spreading false information during such a difficult time.
"Some people pretended to be sad and walked around in the rain, while others tried to hurt our family by creating fake news about insurance and expenses," – DJ Koo
Wang Xiaofei's actions also garnered attention when he was seen walking home in the rain shortly after Barbie's passing. He reportedly urged reporters to speak positively about Barbie amidst their tumultuous legal history. Barbie had previously sued Wang Xiaofei and his mother, Zhang Lan, for defaming her on social media and breaching their children's privacy agreement.
"At this time, I can't help but think there are really evil people in this world. Please don't do such things. Please let our Barbie rest in peace, I sincerely plead with you." – DJ Koo
