Earthquake in Kanchanaburi Leaves Dams Unscathed

Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (egat) have released an emergency announcement. This follows the 2.4-magnitude earthquake that occurred off Kanchanaburi Province the night of April 14. The epicenter of the earthquake was at 12.8210°N, 99.6680°E, about 7.81 km east of the Vajiralongkorn Dam. EGAT has repeatedly assured that the dams in Kanchanaburi and neighbouring provinces are still structurally sound and safe. They may be sheltered from the ripples of the seismic shift.

EGAT continued to appease residents by assuring them that the dams in the area were constructed safely. In fact, they highlighted that there was no damage even located. Security officials performed extensive on-site checks at the crest of the Vajiralongkorn Dam after the quake. The first post-earthquake inspection determined that the peak ground acceleration at the Vajiralongkorn Dam was only 0.01570 g. This is well below the design threshold of 0.1 g for the dam.

Additionally, the earthquake’s impacts were recorded at several other dams in the area. Ground acceleration measurements at the Srinagarind Dam only measured a low 0.00035 g. 0.00213 g These readings were even lower in Tak Province, as shown by readings from Bhumibol Dam. These figures continue to provide reassurance about the response of these vital infrastructures during significant seismic shaking.

EGAT’s preventive approaches and quick inspections highlight their efforts to protect the public while staying true to a reliable operation. By addressing concerns in a timely manner, they hope to dispel any worries about the effects that earthquakes could have on vital infrastructure.
