Ed Sheeran Creates Musical History with First International Concert in Bhutan

Ed Sheeran made history on Friday, January 24, by performing at Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu, Bhutan. This marked the first time an international artist held a concert in the country. The event was a significant milestone for Bhutan's music scene, drawing attention from both local fans and international media. The British singer-songwriter's visit was warmly welcomed by Bhutan's King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema.

Prior to the groundbreaking performance, Ed Sheeran had the honor of dining with the king and queen. The royal couple expressed their hopes for visitors to understand and respect Bhutan's cultural ideals. They emphasized their desire for people to love and appreciate the unique charm of their nation.

"I went for dinner with the king and queen yesterday and they said, 'We just want people coming to the country that want to love and respect the country and understand the ideals.'"

Ed Sheeran expressed his astonishment at being part of such a historic event, describing it as "mad" to be breaking records in Bhutan. He found it an honor to perform at Changlimithang Stadium and praised the local fans for their incredible warmth and hospitality.

"It's mad that this is the first international concert here. I hope that there's many more to come."

Reflecting on his career journey, Sheeran shared his thoughts on Instagram, highlighting the significance of performing in Bhutan. He recalled his early days of playing to empty rooms and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play the first international concert in the country.

"To be able to visit a country like Bhutan, to be able to stand onstage and bring this show here. I can remember playing to an empty room and now I get to play the first international concert in Bhutan – ever."

Sheeran found the experience particularly unique, noting that despite having traveled the world, he had never encountered anything quite like this.

"I've been all around the world, been to some amazing places, but I've never done anything like this before."

The concert was a proud moment for Ed Sheeran, who felt honored to be chosen for such a landmark event. His performance has set a precedent for future international artists visiting Bhutan.

"Yeah, I feel super honoured that I was chosen and I can't wait to play. This is like, such my jam."
