Epic Games Celebrates New Changes That Favor Developers

Unsurprisingly, Epic Games is absolutely thrilled with this big win that could change the entire landscape of the gaming industry. Apple has made it much easier on developers to avoid app store fees by allowing developers to bypass them, the company recently announced. This announcement follows a 2021 court decision ruling against Apple. Beginning in June, Epic Games will allow third party developers to retain 100 percent of their game’s annual revenue up to $1 million. They will not begin to take their share until the revenue goes above that threshold.

We believe this decision signals a new direction that will better empower game developers with a more dynamic form of financial flexibility. Recent court decisions have given developers the ability to target players in a game and funnel them toward digital transactions. All of this applies to any platform that allows sideloading, including iOS in the European Union and United States.

Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, who presided at the 2021 trial. Among several other outcomes, she ruled that Apple cannot prevent developers from telling customers where to purchase digital products outside of its ecosystem. In a later filing, she referred to Apple’s behavior as an egregious and willful infringement of her prior order.

The Epic Games Store one is particularly notable because of its discordant gradient design. It must do this if it wants to attract more developers and gamers. Its visual identity is further accentuated with a rich image resolution of 1920×1080, making evident its sleek, clean, intuitive design and highly interactive interface.

Amanda Silberling, a senior writer at TechCrunch, covered the exciting news. Most importantly, she highlighted how it will affect the balance of power between developers and platform holders. Silberling’s background is in English with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania. With her experience as a Princeton in Asia Fellow in Laos, she contributes essential nuance to understanding how the culture affects how technology is incorporated.

If fully adopted, the changes announced by Epic Games should encourage more innovative and competitive gaming platforms to enter and thrive in the market. As developers come to increasingly depend on discerning new revenue streams, the rules of the digital sale game could change dramatically.
