Ex-Malaysian PM’s Aides in Corruption Spotlight as Ismail Recovers in Hospital

Four former senior officers from the tenure of Malaysia's ex-Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob have been detained since last Friday, amid an ongoing corruption investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC). This development comes as Ismail himself was rushed to a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday due to high blood pressure. His condition has reportedly improved, and he is currently recovering.

The MACC's probe centers around the discovery of more than 100 million ringgit (approximately US$22.7 million) found hidden in bags and safes at the residence of one of the suspects. In addition to the substantial cash, authorities seized documents, jewellery, and electronic devices during the raid. The investigation is part of a broader crackdown aimed at rooting out corruption, with the MACC indicating that further witnesses may be summoned for questioning.

"The MACC is currently unable to reveal the findings of investigations into this case including the value of cash or assets that were found and does not discount the possibility that several other witnesses will be called in to assist investigations," stated the MACC.

Reports from local news agencies on Monday highlighted the improved health condition of Ismail Sabri Yaakob, citing statements from his family and aides. They revealed that Ismail collapsed at his home in Kuala Lumpur due to high blood pressure, which necessitated his immediate hospitalization.

The New Straits Times provided further details on the corruption probe, citing sources that confirmed the seizure of over 100 million ringgit and other items from the suspect's house. However, the MACC has refrained from disclosing detailed findings, as the investigation remains active.
