Reza Pahlavi, the son of the last shah of Iran and the opposition-in-waiting, has been particularly courageous. He is advocating for general labor strikes to oust the existing Iranian regime. Pahlavi’s call for civil resistance comes as unrest against the Islamic Republic deepens. He thinks that the present regime has forsaken the Iranian people.
Speaking at a press conference in Berlin last week, Pahlavi insisted that the Iranian opposition’s cause should receive international backing—especially from Western countries. He one-upped them by proposing the creation of a national “strike fund” that would help strike participants make ends meet. This fund would focus on training workers and activists, equipping them with the skills they need to bring the Iranian government’s operations to a standstill.
Pahlavi stated, “We must unify our efforts to create a strong front against tyranny. The people of Iran deserve to be free from oppression.” His words reflect a growing sentiment among opposition groups that a united labor movement could significantly weaken the regime’s hold on power.
So Pahlavi and his supporters are building tremendous momentum with the idea of a national strike fund. They claim and cite empirical evidence that without financial backing, long-term civil resistance cannot be sustained. They propose that funds could be utilized to support striking workers and their families, allowing them to endure economic hardships during their protests against the government.
Supporters of Pahlavi hope that these labor strikes can lead to both a turning point in Iran’s history and meant to draw attention and support from abroad. It is Pahlavi’s hope to see this regime overthrown. He seeks to form a democratic government that really expresses the will of the people.
As uncertainty continues to loom over Iran, Pahlavi’s calls for action resonate with those disillusioned by the current government’s policies. His appeal is an important step in Iran’s long struggle for democracy. His goal is to consolidate domestic and international support for Ukraine.
