Indonesian authorities are under scrutiny following a bribery probe involving immigration officers at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta airport. Over 32 million rupiah (US$1,950) in extortion money has been returned to more than 60 Chinese nationals, who were targeted at immigration checkpoints. The alleged incidents, occurring between February of last year and January, involved officials demanding bribes from Chinese nationals during both entry and exit procedures.
The scandal came to light after the Chinese embassy received numerous complaints, leading to a letter sent to Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on January 21. The letter, containing names of the alleged victims, highlighted that extortion amounts ranged from 50,000 rupiah to as much as 1.6 million rupiah. Some travelers faced demands for payment more than once, placing additional strain on those already navigating international travel.
"It is just a tip of the iceberg since many more Chinese nationals who were extorted did not file complaints due to tight schedules or fear of reprisals upon future entries."
The letter suggested practical measures to address the issue, including the installation of "no tips" or "please report if there is extortion" signs in Chinese, Indonesian, and English. The embassy has effectively resolved at least 44 cases of extortion, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the need for systemic changes within immigration protocols.
Chinese travel agencies have been advised to caution tourists against bribing immigration officers. This advisory aims to protect travelers from falling prey to corrupt practices, which have reportedly affected numerous individuals. The embassy's proactive approach marks a significant step toward curbing further exploitation at Indonesian borders.
The viral dissemination of the letter online has intensified pressure on Indonesian officials to take immediate action. The exposure has sparked widespread public interest and demands for accountability from those in power. In response, Indonesian authorities have initiated an investigation into the allegations and are working closely with the Chinese embassy to ensure justice for the victims.
