For Alex Kuan, 57, family travel has evolved into a cherished tradition. This deepens their connections and makes her kids more self-sufficient. She’s had many opportunities to explore the world’s most popular tourist destinations with her family, from the breathtaking Halong Bay in Vietnam. Kuan’s travel philosophy focuses on greater planning and accountability, which she thinks are key to ensuring that everyone has an easy, culturally enriching travel experience.
Kuan’s family has developed a passion for diving, with Sabah’s Semporna being one of their favorite spots. Through excursions via diving, they are able to connect with the world around them and form lifelong memories as a family. Each trip is carefully considered, balancing safety while ensuring all precautionary measures are adhered to.
Prior to allowing her kids to have devices when they turned 15, Kuan entertained them with paper books and board games. Monopoly card decks were a success on their travels. She is passionate about fostering a love of reading. She argues for her kids to dig into books rather than becoming immersed in displays.
Kuan is deeply invested in raising radically independent kids who are capable of caring for their own needs. This attitude fuels more than just her children’s sense of confidence and independence from the family. This attitude makes travel more accessible for the whole family.
“When you start guiding them early, they catch on fast. Before you know it, they are taking care of their own needs and that makes travel a lot smoother for everyone,” – Alex Kuan
Kuan highlights this sense of obligation on their travels. She makes sure, even in this violent world, that her children know what it means to care for one another. Guided by this principle, it has fostered a deeply woven sense of care both between them.
“Looking after each other just comes naturally now,” – Alex Kuan
To get ready for their travels, Kuan always triple-checks and packs medicine with a small first-aid kit. Her proactive approach shows that safety and well-being can go hand in hand with adventure and exploring new destinations.
Kuan’s family has traveled to Kuala Lumpur on several occasions since then. The students enjoy diving into the local culture and seeing the sites of their temporary home. Godspeed off their travels, which are marked by a sense of adventure, as Kuan recounts.
“We love the outdoors – hiking, exploring – but we stay aware and take smart steps to avoid unnecessary risks,” – Alex Kuan
Kuan imparts more than just financial literacy, though she teaches her children strong values. This makes it possible for them to flourish both as focused professionals and dedicated family members. The experiences gained on the road don’t stop when their family vacations are over; they are helping them grow outside of vacation as well.
