Father Sentenced for Utilizing Children in Theft Scheme

Mohammad Ali Redzuan bin Mohammad Ali Yusri, a 34-year-old man, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison. Specifically, he was the driver in a theft spree that occurred during the late-night hours of May 5 into May 6. On May 10, authorities apprehended him after surveillance video was released. Uniquely, witness statements from store staff were enough to bring charges against him in the crimes.

Further thefts followed at its Times Square and Mid Valley Shopping Centre outlets. Mohammad Ali Redzuan ventured into these spaces time and again, with three of his four children in tow, all under the ages of 10-12. Over these visits, he was able to steal items worth around BND275.10. This behavior triggered security personnel and staff to investigate. It was this concern that eventually resulted in Mohammad Ali Redzuan being identified as the suspect.

Upon his arrest, he was charged with four counts of theft under Section 380 of the Penal Code. During a recent court hearing, he entered guilty pleas to each of those allegations. Magistrate Syaffina Shahif heard the case. She imposed a sentence which may include as much as 7 years’ imprisonment and/or a fine.

His exploitation of children to commit the thefts ignited righteous debate. We started to think about the terrible consequences of putting young people into crime. What the authorities are concerned about is the negative impact on the children in the process. In the process they are underscoring the need to prioritize children’s wellbeing.
