Google has announced the rollout of a new recall feature for its AI chatbot, Gemini, offering enhanced conversational memory for English-speaking subscribers. This development is part of the Google One AI Premium subscription, which costs $20 per month. The recall feature allows Gemini to summarize and remember details from previous conversations, bringing a more personal touch to interactions. The feature aims to make Gemini more fluid and intuitive, aligning with similar memory enhancements made by OpenAI to its ChatGPT.
The new feature, revealed in a blog post by Google on Thursday, enables Gemini to recall information shared in different conversation threads. This enhancement represents a significant step forward in AI technology, as it allows chatbots to maintain context and recall personal preferences such as how users like to be addressed or their food choices. This level of personalization has been highly anticipated, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noting that improved memory is one of the most requested features for ChatGPT.
Privacy concerns have been a priority for Google in this rollout. The company allows users to manage their chat history through the "My Activity" page in Gemini, where they can review, delete, or control the duration for which their data is stored. Importantly, Google assures users that it does not train its AI models based on user conversation histories, addressing a common concern regarding data privacy.
The recall feature is also expected to be available in additional languages and to enterprise account holders in the coming weeks. This development reflects a growing trend among AI chatbot providers to explore memory and recall capabilities, aiming to enhance user experience by making interactions more seamless and personalized.
Users have the option to disable the recall feature if they prefer not to have their conversations stored. This flexibility allows users to tailor their experience based on their comfort level with data retention and privacy.
