Geoff Ralston Launches New Fund Focused on AI Safety

Geoff Ralston, a well-known entrepreneur and venture capitalist, has recently been in the news. He is best known for recently announcing his new investment venture, the Safe Artificial Intelligence Fund (SAIF). Ralston, who served as president of Y Combinator (YC) until 2022, is returning to the formal investing scene. His new mission is making AI systems safer, more secure, and ultimately deployed responsibly.

During his tenure at Y Combinator, Ralston established himself as an influential advisor and mentor, shaping the direction of numerous startups. After three years of service, he stepped down last year, passing the torch to Garry Tan. Ralston is enthusiastically looking forward to bringing his experience and expertise to SAIF. He’ll be working to mentor and build the startups that YC will recruit into its own accelerator program.

On Thursday, Ralston took that excitement a step further. As part of his overall vision to foster innovation, he’s pledged to invest $100,000 in safe AI development startups. Crucially, he has placed a $10 million cap on investments through SAIF, making clear that he is not in the business of ‘spray and pray’ funding.

“I intend to fund startups whose primary objective is safe AI – as I have (very broadly) defined it,” Ralston explained in a statement. His vision involves investing in the most truly functional AI tools that put safety first from the start. Ralston has no plans to fund projects that work toward fully autonomous weapons, which point to his dedication toward pursuing ethical applications for AI.

As the discourse around artificial intelligence grows more fraught, Ralston’s safety-first approach comes at a crucial time. He understands that AI is a disruptive technology that can transform entire industries but poses significant risks. “There are certainly uses of AI which would (will) be unsafe: using the technology to create bioweapons, to manage conventional weapons without a human in the loop, etc.,” he noted.

Through SAIF, Ralston aims to create a supportive environment for startups that align with his vision of responsible AI development. He has committed to providing these finalists with financial support and mentorship. With this encouragement, he wants to spur innovation that focuses on keeping AI applications safe and secure.
