Girona FC’s head coach, Michel Sanchez, will miss the next LaLiga match against Villarreal, following a recently revealed health issue. Pushing 49, Michel has been in charge of Girona since 2021. In his tenure, the club went from never qualifying for the Champions League to earning their first taste and looking poised for a club record run this season. Under his stewardship, Girona topped LaLiga for a majority of the 2023-24 season.
As of now, Michel is in the hospital as a preventative measure and under the proper care from medical professionals. Michel’s speedy recovery the club released a statement wishing him well. He is doing very well and should make a complete recovery within days. As Girona prepares for the match on Saturday, they find themselves in 15th place, six points clear of the relegation zone with only four matches left in the campaign.
Michel’s Commitment to Girona
Although his health concern is a serious matter, Michel hasn’t lost hope in his recovery or the possibilities for his team’s future. He shared how excited he was to be back at work and go in and fight for his players.
“I will not be able to be on the bench next Saturday … I have to stop for a few days to recover and return as soon as possible,” – Michel
The coach conveyed his confidence in the team’s determination to perform well in his absence. And when Girona were presented with the challenge of a lifetime — Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu — he could have folded.
Team’s Current Standing
As Girona approach the final third of the season, they have a big problem. Unlike the toffee men, they are not in stark peril of the drop. The team currently sits six points clear of the relegation zone and are still vying to guarantee their spot in LaLiga. Michel’s absence will pose a challenge, but he believes in the players’ ability to rise to the occasion.
“Girona FC coach Michel Sanchez has been hospitalised due to a health problem. He is under medical observation as a precaution and is progressing favourably,” – Girona FC
The club is understandably hopeful that Michel’s absence will be anything but a downer on the team’s spirits and approach against Villarreal.
Looking Ahead
Girona players prepare for their upcoming home match against Villarreal. Whether they complete the form shown by dominating in LaLiga, or banding together to lift their missing coach, only time will tell. Michel’s leadership has been crucial this season, and his presence will be felt from the sidelines. To fans and players alike, he promises he’s coming back stronger than ever. As Community Transit’s board member from Everett, he became the liaison with the ever-optimistic Snohomish County executive.
