Google’s AI research lab, Google DeepMind, has developed a groundbreaking AI model known as DolphinGemma, aimed at deciphering the complex vocalizations of dolphins. This groundbreaking technology has the potential to give researchers an unprecedented opportunity to delve deeper into dolphin communication. It escalates their mission to learn more about these brainy ocean dwellers.
DolphinGemma, created on Google’s open Gemma series of models, marks an exciting leap forward in AI generated capabilities. The model’s task is to generate “dolphin-like” sound sequences. These sounds will be integral to the exploratory trials to be conducted by the Wild Dolphin Project (WDP). The WDP is a nonprofit organization focused on researching Atlantic spotted dolphins and their behavior. Specifically, it looks to leverage Google’s forthcoming Pixel 9 flagship smartphone to accelerate its new research-focused initiatives.
We are using Pixel 9 smartphone and Android-based platform to develop synthetic dolphin vocalizations. Simultaneously, it’ll listen for actual dolphin sounds to produce corresponding responses. This dual function will allow researchers to examine the subtleties of dolphin communication in a way that was not previously possible.
WDP researchers had done similar work before using the Pixel 6. Having recently moved up to the Pixel 9 to enhance their analytical capacity, the new smartphone has three times more processing power. It allows scientists to run AI models and template-matching algorithms in parallel, a capability that dramatically increases the productivity of both their studies.
DolphinGemma received thousands of hours of training on data that the Wild Dolphin Project had previously collected. This careful preparation allows the model to truly learn and understand the vocal patterns of Atlantic spotted dolphins. Google has emphasized that the model is efficient enough to operate on mobile devices, making it accessible for field research in remote marine environments.
The partnership between Wild Dolphin Project and Google DeepMind presents an exciting new frontier for marine biology research. Scientists are using state-of-the-art artificial intelligence to decipher the dolphin’s literal and proverbial tongues.
