Waratahs Test star Jake Gordon is set to make his long-awaited return to the field this Saturday. He’ll be up against the ACT Brumbies in Canberra on Friday night, but with the NSW Waratahs jersey on his back. Gordon returns to the Waratah’s fold in time for their final stretch after a two month lay off. He encountered many challenges that forced him to reconsider his overseas plans.
At 31 years old, Gordon is poised to keep that promise. He’s decided to reacquaint himself with domestic rugby, both with the Wallabies and his Super Rugby team, the Waratahs. He issued a heartfelt summation of his career. Now, he’s looking forward to figuring out what path he wants to pursue in the future.
“I really enjoyed my time with the Wallabies last year and really enjoyed my time with Joe (Schmidt). He was really good for my development at test level,” Gordon stated while speaking to reporters in Sydney.
Gordon shared his thanks for Head Coach Joe Schmidt. Since then, Schmidt has had his tenure extended through mid-2026 before handing over to Les Kiss. “He’s someone who’s seen a lot over time and his credentials speak for himself,” Gordon remarked, indicating that Schmidt’s experience has been beneficial for him.
The scrumhalf pointed out that the Waratahs have not been able to play to their potential when playing away from home. “We probably haven’t performed the way we wanted to away from home,” he noted. He’s positive they can turn it around, especially as they face off against last-place D.C. United this weekend.
We were tough to play against and played some really great attacking footy at home. Our sole focus this weekend is on getting a really big win over the Brumbies,” he said, underlining the commitment of the team to ensuring the result.
Reflecting on his previous interest in pursuing opportunities abroad, Gordon said, “A little bit’s changed from probably last time I was looking to going offshore.” This change of heart speaks volume of his professionalism and how much he looks forward doing his best for Australian rugby both on Super Rugby and International Stage.
