Grab Accelerates Southeast Asia’s EV Transition with BYD Partnership

Grab, Southeast Asia's leading ride-hailing platform, has unveiled ambitious plans to transform its electric vehicle (EV) fleet by integrating up to 50,000 BYD vehicles across the region. This initiative signifies a strategic push towards greener transportation, targeting eight countries: Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The partnership is poised to redefine how passengers experience mobility in these countries while tackling environmental challenges head-on.

Through this collaboration, Grab aims to leverage the advanced Internet of Things (IoT) integration between BYD vehicles and its platform. By enabling real-time data sharing, such as wiper signals and travel speeds, Grab can offer more precise insights into external conditions like weather and traffic. This technological edge enhances operational efficiency and improves passenger service by reducing waiting times.

“Through this partnership, Grab and BYD look to boost the electrification of the transportation sector in Southeast Asia,” – Grab

Recognizing the importance of building supportive infrastructure, Grab has joined forces with six major EV charging companies in Singapore. These include SP Mobility, Charge+, CDG-ENGIE, ChargEco, Shell, and Volt. Together, they aim to offer attractive discounts for EV drivers, making the transition to electric vehicles more economically viable.

“By leveraging these discounts, our partners can reduce their operational costs while making the shift to greener transport more affordable and accessible,” – Grab's spokesperson

Despite the promising outlook, Singapore faces unique challenges in providing cost-effective overnight charging solutions for private-hire drivers. Unlike private EV owners, these drivers cover greater daily mileage and thus require daily charging. High-power fast-charging options remain costly and time-consuming compared to home car park charging.

“However, there isn't necessarily home AC charging available at all HDB car parks yet, nor would it be reliably available every day,” – Assoc Prof Walter Theseira

Singapore's relatively small market size poses another challenge in vehicle allocation. Associate Professor Raymond Ong from the National University of Singapore (NUS) noted that larger markets like Malaysia and Indonesia might take precedence.

“If I look at sheer market size, I don’t think Singapore will be a significant majority (of where the 50,000 cars will be allocated), because the market in Malaysia and Indonesia is quite huge for Grab,” – Associate Professor Raymond Ong

Nevertheless, Singapore continues to develop its EV infrastructure alongside Malaysia's investments in this area. The country's infrastructure progress ensures that charging points are increasingly available for passenger use.

“For Singapore, (EV infrastructure) is the least of the concerns, because its infrastructure is developing, and is more or less on track in terms of charging points for passenger use, (and) Malaysia is also investing quite a lot on EV infrastructure,” – Assoc Prof Ong

Grab acknowledges that Southeast Asia remains in the nascent stages of its EV journey. However, the company is committed to overcoming existing limitations by collaborating with key players in the EV ecosystem and utilizing its robust data and technology network.

“While there has been encouraging progress in recent years, developing a robust EV ecosystem in the region requires addressing several challenges, such as the availability of affordable EV models, the need for more extensive charging infrastructure, and the expansion of charging and battery-swapping stations,” – Grab's spokesperson

In an effort to foster sustainable transport choices, passengers in Singapore and Thailand can opt for "eco-friendly rides" through Grab's app at no additional cost. This feature highlights Grab’s dedication to environmental responsibility by making green transport options accessible to more users.

“This increases the chances of passengers getting a ride quickly, without long waiting times,” – Grab
