Hollywood’s Awards Season Disrupted by Los Angeles Wildfires

The 97th Oscars nominations voting opened amidst unprecedented challenges, as wildfires ravaged Southern California. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences initially postponed the nominations due to the fires, affecting thousands of its members based in the area. Voting began at 9 a.m. PT, but the period was extended by two days, now closing on January 17, to accommodate those impacted. Meanwhile, the announcement of the nominations has been delayed, with the shortlists set to be revealed on January 23. The ceremony itself remains scheduled for March 3.

The fires have prompted calls for action from notable figures. Stephen King urged the cancellation of the Oscars, stating that the event should not proceed while Los Angeles battles such devastation. The Academy responded by expressing their sympathy and extending the voting timeline. They acknowledged that around 6,000 of their 10,000 members reside in the affected region.

"We want to offer our deepest condolences to those who have been impacted by the devastating fires across Southern California." – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

Jean Smart also voiced her concerns, advocating for networks to refrain from broadcasting awards shows during this difficult time. Smart suggested that networks donate potential revenues to assist fire victims and support firefighting efforts. Her comments came as the Critics Choice Awards postponed their event by two weeks to January 26. The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, however, are still slated to air on ABC and E!.

"Attention! With all due respect, during Hollywood's season of celebration, I hope any of the networks televising the upcoming awards will seriously consider not televising them and donating the revenue they would have garnered to victims of the fires and the firefighters." – Jean Smart

The Academy's decision to delay the Oscar nominations by two days until January 19 reflects their commitment to inclusivity and fairness in light of the circumstances. This extension offers members additional time to submit their votes amidst ongoing disruptions caused by the fires.

"Not voting in the Oscars this year. IMHO they should cancel them. No glitz with Los Angeles on fire." – Stephen King
