India has made strategic moves to strengthen its ties with the United States following the return of President Donald Trump to power. The Indian government announced a reduction in customs duties on high-end motorcycles, cars, and smartphone parts, a decision that directly benefits major American companies such as Harley-Davidson, Tesla, and Apple. This initiative reflects India's efforts to align more closely with the new US administration.
The issue of high tariffs on Harley-Davidson motorcycles has long been a point of contention for President Trump. In the past, he criticized India as a major tariff abuser and pressured Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reduce tariffs on Harleys from 75% to 50%. By cutting these duties further, India aims to address these concerns and promote a fair bilateral trading relationship with the US. The country has also assured the US of its commitment to the primacy of the US dollar, signaling its intention to mitigate the $35 billion trade deficit it currently holds with the United States.
In addition to economic measures, India has actively cooperated with Trump's immigration policies by accepting 18,000 illegal Indian immigrants that the president plans to deport. Recently, a US military plane landed in Amritsar, India, carrying these immigrants, who arrived handcuffed and with their legs chained, illustrating the stringent measures being enforced.
Amidst these developments, President Trump has encouraged India to increase its purchase of US security equipment. This request aligns with his broader vision of bolstering trade ties and ensuring balanced trade between the two nations. Furthermore, Trump's previous decision to revoke India's preferential trade treatment in 2019 remains a point of concern for the Indian government as it seeks to withstand potential economic ramifications.
The diplomatic relationship between India and the US appears poised for renewal as President Trump has granted Prime Minister Modi an audience next week. This meeting positions Modi as one of the first foreign leaders to engage with Trump since his return to power.
