Jannik Sinner completed a sizzling Italian Open comeback, bringing his tour-level winning streak to 22 matches. The 23-year-old star of the tennis world went up against Mariano Navone in the opening round and advanced with a straight-sets victory, 6-3, 6-4. Sinner, fresh from his successful three-month doping ban appeal, delivered a scintillating performance. That’s right, he hadn’t played since winning the Australian Open back in January.
Here’s how the world number one was feeling immediately after his latest victory. He announced it was “incredible” to be back on the court. In February, Sinner came to a settlement agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency. He’d recently tested positive for the anabolic agent clostebol, which he insisted was the result of massages received from his physiotherapist.
Overcoming Challenges
Given Sinner’s layoff and the peculiar circumstances of his suspension, his return was especially important. He had a daunting task in Navone, who put on an absolutely dazzling display of mixed martial arts chops for the entire contest.
“I’m very happy about the win today. It was very difficult. (Navone) is such a great player, especially on this surface. I tried to move around the ball.” – Jannik Sinner
Outside of a few stumbles throughout the contest, Sinner did an admirable job of keeping his poise to produce an impressive showing. He continued to look back on his experience, and how easily he slipped right back into the competitive landscape after the extended time away.
“I was surprised how things can (feel good) so quickly. I tried to give everything I have. I think that’s the only thing I can do and that’s the only thing I can control right now.” – Jannik Sinner
Looking Ahead
Following this key victory, Sinner is set to face Jesper de Jong in the second round of the tournament. His confidence is sky high and he is hungry to keep his winning streak alive.
Sinner acknowledged the challenges he faced during the match against Navone, particularly when he was broken in the second set. He stayed laser-focused and committed to seizing control of the game.
“The sensation felt quite good, to be honest. Of course, there were some ups and downs, that is normal, but (Navone) played some great tennis, especially when he broke me in the second set.” – Jannik Sinner
A New Beginning
The Italian Open represents not just a return to competition for Sinner but a fresh start after overcoming adversity related to his doping ban. He shared the excitement he experienced after waiting nearly 40 years for this day. He could barely contain the joy radiating from him as he returned to the game.
“It’s an amazing feeling. I waited quite long for this moment. I’m very happy to be back.” – Jannik Sinner
