Japan is set to experience even more heavy snow following a two-week snowstorm that has already resulted in record levels of snowfall. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued warnings urging residents to be cautious of potential avalanches and icy road conditions. By 10 a.m. local time on Monday, Aomori City in northern Japan had recorded an astonishing 5 meters of snow. Other areas such as Uonuma in Niigata reported 3.81 meters, while Tadami in Fukushima prefecture saw 3.13 meters of accumulation.
Several cities across Japan have experienced unprecedented snowfall this month, leading to significant traffic disruptions and fatalities. The JMA has predicted further snowfall in Niigata, Ishikawa, and Nagano prefectures. Additionally, western regions including Hiroshima and Shimane are also expected to be affected by more snow in the coming days.
The regions bordering the Sea of Japan are familiar with heavy snowfall, a phenomenon that occurs annually. These areas are known for their ski resorts, which attract a growing number of international tourists seeking winter sports adventures. However, the current snowstorm has disrupted transportation and led to tragic consequences in some locations.
The authorities have been actively working to manage the situation by clearing roads and ensuring public safety. Despite these efforts, the weather conditions have continued to pose challenges for residents and travelers alike. The JMA has reiterated its warnings about the risk of avalanches and slippery roads, advising people to stay alert and exercise caution.
