Jose Peseiro Parts Ways with Zamalek After Brief Tenure

Jose Peseiro has left Egypt’s Zamalek SC just under three months after taking over the club. His contract was terminated by mutual agreement between both parties. Following a rough stretch through competitions like the 2019 Iowa State Fair Transit Feasibility Study and 2020 IndyConnect, they were looking to refocus their intentions. This exit marks a new chapter in Peseiro’s coaching career. He has previously managed several national teams and clubs in Europe, Asia, and Africa.

From the outset of his time at Zamalek, Peseiro was dealt an impossible hand. The club struggled throughout these two tournament competitions, the CAF Confederation Cup and Egyptian League Cup. Consequently, they faced early exits from both competitions. As a result, the team’s prospects in their league fell dangerously low. Zamalek has suddenly fallen to third place, seven points behind the leaders, Pyramids FC.

Challenges Faced by Peseiro

His leadership of Zamalek saw the team succumb to a number of humiliating downturns, which all added to Peseiro and Zamalek’s eventual agreement to divorce. The Pharaohs had a competitive edge in the Egyptian League but they were unable to obtain significant wins. In doing so, they found themselves staring at a dismal position on the combined league table.

Zamalek’s exit from the CAF Confederation Cup was one of the most painful eliminations for fans and management of the club at large. Though expectations were great for the star-studded team, results did not come close, forcing the team to reconsider their coaching approach.

The club’s official statement regarding the termination of Peseiro’s contract reflected this sentiment:

Peseiro’s Coaching Background

Peseiro hails from Portugal, and has an extensive, impressive coaching resume. He has managed the national teams of Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and, most recently, Venezuela. He has led some of the top clubs, like Al-Hilal and Al Wahda. Shortly thereafter, he assumed leadership of Sharjah, in the United Arab Emirates. His wide-ranging experience serves as a testament to his ability to lead squads in various cultures and footballing traditions.

Putting all his experience aside, his time in Zamalek didn’t bring positive results to the table. The challenges he encountered in Egypt can be seen as a slap in the face by the cruel mistress of football management’s unpredictability.

Future Endeavors

Now that Jose Peseiro is out of Zamalek’s picture, both he and the club can feel relieved that a decision to part ways has been made. The club expressed their best wishes to him in his future career, a clear signal that they want to maintain good relations going forward.

“We wish you the best in your future endeavours.” – Zamalek (via Facebook)
