Seventeen-year-old Andalusian prodigy Lamine Yamal marked out his own landmark achievement in the very next match. He achieved his 100th appearance for FC Barcelona at the tender age of just 17 years and 291 days. The precocious young Spanish international stole a march on his competitors by becoming the youngest player to score in a Champions League semi-final. He in turn broke the record set by Kylian Mbappé, who established the record at 18 in 2017. Yamal’s breathtaking solo effort to open the scoring sent shockwaves of energy through the game. It powered Barcelona to come back and defeat Inter Milan from down an early 2-0 hole.
Yamal’s goal was the turning point of a frantic opening 45 minutes, rejuvenating his side after a torrid start. The forward’s individual brilliance completely swung the momentum of the match. This was the moment at which his talent, and more importantly the importance, of his role in the Catalan side became apparent. Barcelona’s fans and even his teammates know that Yamal is a generational talent that comes around only once every 50 years.
Prior to this match, Germany’s Hansi Flick had never seen Yamal play in person. He couldn’t hide his excitement for the young player’s eye-popping performance. He expressed that Yamal played a big role in changing the game’s momentum.
“Lamine (Yamal) showed us the way with that incredible goal because it was crucial to score that goal after we were losing by two goals, he played really well.” – Hansi Flick
On the ball, Yamal caused major headaches for Inter, especially in that last half hour of the first half. His vibrant playstyle and knack for creating opportunities for his teammates turned the heads of each coach on the sidelines. Simone Inzaghi, Inter’s manager, acknowledged Yamal’s impact and reflected on the challenges his team faced in managing such a skilled player.
“We had to be better on Lamine Yamal, but it’s much easier to say that from outside. He is a player who impressed me and he created a lot of problems for us, mainly in the last 30 minutes of the first half.” – Simone Inzaghi
He hailed their opponents Barcelona for their play on the night, their fighting spirit, and control when playing out from the back. Even with Inter’s best attempts to shut Yamal down, he understood the situation his squad was in, in trying to play out their game plan to perfection.
“We played with style and we tried to win. Lamine was a very important player for us… In the big games, as he has already shown, he always turns up.” – Simone Inzaghi
With each passing game Barcelona plays in the Champions League, the importance of Lamine Yamal only grows. His ability to deliver in crucial moments positions him as a key player for both his club and the national team.
