Lando Norris Secures First Monaco Grand Prix Pole Position Since 2007

Formula 1 star Lando Norris has finally made it big on the track. He has all but clinched his maiden pole at the Monaco GP! Indeed, this was McLaren’s first Monaco pole since 2007. It’s a big shot in the arm for Norris himself, who’s had a tough go in this still-nascent Formula One season. His stunning final flying lap denied Scuderia Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc the opportunity of taking pole position. This was a defining moment for the young rookie driver that showed poise, grit, confidence and driver’s flair.

Norris’s pole position follows a season of highs and lows with inconsistent weekend results. Additionally, he’s struggled to find consistency in qualifying sessions. He ended up sixth in Bahrain, tenth in Saudi Arabia, and fourth at Imola. After overcoming all those hurdles, it’s hard to fault Norris for being proud of the job he did in Monaco. He said it was probably the first time since Australia that he had really “put it all together.”

Acknowledging Recent Struggles

Norris has been frank about his battle for the title this year. He certainly isn’t afraid of the inter-team competition with his McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri. As it stands, he is 13 points behind Piastri after seven races. Reflecting on his struggles, Norris noted that he had been working diligently with his team to improve various aspects of his performance.

“I’ve been working very hard with my team away from the track, and here at the track, to work on as many areas as possible,” Norris said. Especially because he noted that as someone who prefers actionable outcomes, he’s the first to admit that things need time to develop. “I know that sometimes I always want immediate results. But sometimes it takes time, and it has taken time,” he added.

In case you are wondering, the significance of this pole position was not lost on Norris. He stated that it “probably means even more… because of what’s happened over the last couple of months,” referring to his challenges in qualifying and race performance.

A Shift in Performance

Norris’s recent strong showing at the Monaco Grand Prix is an indication that it may be a new season of momentum. As a result, many people think his car is the second quickest – if not the fastest – on the grid. Norris added that he is still changing his own driving style going forward. “It’s not like I’m driving quicker, it’s I’m driving in a better way, in a smarter way,” he explained.

Yet the driver understood that this pole position was the result of a lot of sweat and grit. “To know that some of those things have paid off and it’s heading in the right direction… is very good to know,” he remarked.

Norris was quick to point out that confidence must be maintained in all sessions. “I’ll be happier if I know and I can get to that point where I’m confident in every session that I can perform like I did today,” he stated.

Looking Ahead

Even as Norris hones his skills for 2024 and beyond, it’s clear that he doesn’t want to just replicate this kind of performance. He expressed pride in his accomplishment, noting, “It may not seem like a lot. For me, it’s quite a big deal. So, yeah, it’s a very, very good moment.”

Norris’s first pole position, at Monaco of all places, may be a turning point in his season. It provides him inspiration and a strong foundation to address the challenges ahead in the quest for a formula one championship.
