Charles Leclerc latest showing off his prodigious talent, topping the speed charts in each of the opening two practice sessions. To conquer the Monaco Grand Prix, obviously! The Ferrari driver went fastest with a brilliant best lap of one minute 11.355 seconds. He bested the reigning champion, Max Verstappen, by 0.163 seconds! Despite facing challenges, including an early collision that damaged his car, Leclerc displayed resilience and determination on the storied streets of Monaco.
Leclerc’s day got off to a bumpy start. He came together with a barrier, breaking the front wing of his Ferrari into pieces. This unfortunate event brought on a short red flag session, but Leclerc was able to recover quickly and return to the session. His talent to bounce back from hard times shined as he reeled off blistering lap times all weekend long over the course of the sessions.
Close Competition with Piastri
Oscar Piastri, the promising rookie from McLaren, was the closest challenger on the day, finishing in second place just 0.038 sec behind Leclerc’s best effort. That performance was the high-water mark of his breakout F1 career. It was no doubt a glimpse of his potential to compete at the highest level. His first major disappointment came after crashing into the tyre wall nose-first at Sainte Devote. As you might imagine, this second session was not without incident.
Formula 1 rookie Piastri’s teammate Lando Norris, though, had his own up-and-down day on track. He went on to finish third and fourth in the respective sessions, but struggled to find pace and confidence with his car. Norris noted the challenges posed by Monaco’s tight confines, stating, “Monaco is always quite tricky with traffic but two times today it was quite dangerous.” He suffered a first corner collision that damaged his rear suspension.
Verstappen and Hamilton Struggle
Max Verstappen, winner of the most recent race in Imola, had a difficult practice. He still made it into the top 10, finishing 10th in that session alone. The Dutch driver was clear about his frustrations with traffic that prevented him from getting the clean laps he needed. His comments reflect a challenging day as he seeks to improve before the race weekend.
It was a difficult race for Lewis Hamilton too. He was ninth on the speed chart for the opening session and seventh for the second. The dynamic veteran and former world champion hopes to return to form and contender status following a string of rough races. Fernando Alonso made it into the top 10, seventh in the second session. He backed that small miracle up with a second-place performance in practice one.
