Macron Advocates for EU Law Changes Amidst Talks with China

French President Emmanuel Macron has been in the news for his cutting edge approach. He’s now seeking major revisions to European Union regulations and is leading European diplomatic discussions with global leaders. Most recently, Macron joined forces with the German opposition leader Friedrich Merz. They are calling on the European Union to repeal one of its most critical laws on ethical supply chains, the due diligence rule.

Macron is the engine driving the reform locomotive. Simultaneously, he’s been making moves to deepen France’s economic relationship with China. In a recent conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Macron addressed various issues, including tariffs and the pursuit of peace. During the discussion, he emphasized the importance of gaining greater access to the Chinese market, which could significantly benefit French businesses, particularly in sectors like agriculture and luxury goods.

The most concrete of Macron’s demands to Beijing was asking that the Chinese government not slap tariffs on Cognac manufacturers. This action indicates the President’s priority to defend strategic French exports that account for significant parts of our national economy and employment.

Macron’s domestic agenda is hugely controversial. Bernard Arnault, the CEO of luxury goods conglomerate LVMH, quickly shot down Macron’s latest plea. He argued that he would not pursue a freeze on investments in the United States. This new request marks a significant shift away from the policies of former President Donald Trump. Others contend that such policies violate the spirit of international trade agreements. In doing so, Arnault indirectly rebutted Macron’s proposal, claiming that the government should not meddle in business decisions.

The ongoing dialogue between Macron and influential business leaders like Arnault illustrates the balancing act that the French President must navigate as he seeks to promote national interests while fostering a conducive environment for international investment.
