Mark Lee Embraces Change: From “Ah Beng” Roles to International Acclaim

Mark Lee, a celebrated actor known for his dynamic performances, has experienced a transformative journey in his acting career. Recently nominated for Best Actor at the prestigious Golden Horse Awards for his role in "Number 1," Lee's team also clinched the award for Best Makeup and Costume Design for the same film. This recognition marks a significant milestone for Lee, who has been actively exploring diverse roles and genres while expanding his international reach.

Lee candidly shared his initial uncertainty about his career direction during an interview.

"At the time, I already had no idea what I wanted to play." – Mark Lee

He felt pigeonholed into playing characters like "Ah Beng," known for their loud demeanor.

"That's not to say that I am very good in my acting, but I was at a point where I felt I could only act as an Ah Beng who speaks loudly." – Mark Lee

This realization led him to explore new opportunities and scripts, such as the thriller-action film "Geylang" and the family drama "Wonderland."

Lee's role in "Wonderland" opened doors for him to participate in international film awards and festivals, providing a platform to interact with actors and directors worldwide. These experiences have motivated him to push his performance boundaries, fostering growth and innovation in his craft. His interactions during these events inspired him to expand his acting repertoire and embrace novel characters and stories.

One of Lee's most embraced roles is Chow Chee Beng from the movie "Number 1." Lee expressed profound enjoyment in embodying this character.

"I only wanted to present different emotions. I enjoyed playing Chee Beng very much." – Mark Lee

In "Number 2," the sequel to "Number 1," Chee Beng faces new challenges within the drag community following a conflict arising during his work as a property agent. The film takes the audience on an exhilarating journey involving a drag competition in Thailand. Chee Beng's personal life also unfolds as he navigates a strained relationship with his rebellious son, Mason, played by Estovan Reizo Cheah.

Beyond his professional commitments, Lee remains dedicated to his family. He shares three children—daughters Calista (16) and Calynn (11), and son Maksonn (13)—with his wife, Catherine Ng. Lee uses contemporary language, picked up from young adults he meets at work, to connect with his children.

"I would use words such as 'slay' and 'bro' in conversation with my children, and they would be surprised that I knew it." – Mark Lee

"I learnt these words and their meanings from young adults that I came across during work and use it with my children to bridge the gap." – Mark Lee

This effort helps him foster open communication with them.

"So when I bring them to and from school, they are more willing to open up to me." – Mark Lee

"Number 2" not only highlights Lee's versatility but also showcases the evolving landscape of his career. He first met Jaspers Lai, then an aspiring screenwriter, while filming Jack Neo's movie "Wonderful!" Their interaction marked the beginning of Lee's journey into diverse storytelling, ultimately leading him to write the script for "Number 1."
