The feature is often utilized to “dunk” on another person’s post, potentially engendering a flood of abusive replies directed at the original poster, particularly affecting high-profile individuals with large followings. Mastodon is currently collaborating with various stakeholders to create a specification that would allow all Mastodon apps and clients to uniformly access this functionality.
The proposed specification aims to ensure that users have control over whether their posts can be quoted. This measure is intended to address user concerns about privacy and unwanted attention. Some third-party Mastodon clients have already introduced their own versions of quote posts, yet they lack the comprehensive user control and privacy features Mastodon plans to integrate. Despite the technical challenges posed by the absence of a standardized method for building the feature within ActivityPub, Mastodon is forging ahead with its development efforts.
