Meta Unveils API for Llama Models Amid Ambitious AI Investment Plans

Meta just released an application programming interface (API) for tailoring and benchmarking its Llama models. The announcement, reported by TechCrunch on April 29, 2025, marks a significant step in the company’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its artificial intelligence capabilities. This latest change is part of a larger trend at Meta, which is pouring billions into their AI infrastructure.

Meta plans to spend $60B-$80B on CAPEX. The biggest concern will be the race to build as many big, shiny, new data centers as possible. This important investment highlights the tech giant’s intent to build on its existing AI development and deployment leadership. In 2024, that’s where Meta pledged over $900 million to its “GenAI” budget. Now, this investment is projected to exceed $1 billion in 2025. This jump includes the company’s overall focus on accelerating generative AI-related technologies.

TechCrunch AI Editor Kyle Wiggers couldn’t underscore enough how big this API launch is. He tied it all to Meta’s moonshot efforts in building the metaverse. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta/FB, has announced some pretty ambitious targets for 2025. In the field of AI alone, he plans on purchasing one to three million graphics processing units (GPUs) to create a massive infrastructure. This investment is intended to strengthen Meta’s hand in an AI race that is growing more competitive by the day.

Last week Meta released an API and ballooned its Connect budget. Next, the company is preparing for its next “TC Sessions AI” event – this time in Berkeley, California, on June 5. We look forward to this unique event jumpstarting inspiring conversations around what’s next with AI. It will serve to illuminate Meta’s broader strategy in this quickly changing environment.

The collaboration between Meta and its partners, including a music therapist residing in Manhattan, highlights the diverse applications of AI technology. These partnerships will help accelerate the responsible development of generative AI tools. They will take aim at more sectors too, from healthcare to creative industries.
